Problems with the Alex character
Philip has defended Keeley’s acting in the news, but that really says more about Philip’s great character (by which I don’t mean Gene Hunt!) and loyalty to his coworkers than about her skill as an actress.
I think she’s an average actress and I fault the writers for Alex Drake’s problems more than her. How are you supposed to sink your teeth into a role which was badly written in the first place?
As my brother pointed out to me, Alex is always yelling and acting nuts. Shouting doesn’t make you a smart, secure, modern woman which is what I think she was intended to be. The writer just wasn’t capable of defining a realistic confident woman. They should have brought Joss Whedon on to consult.
To that, my sister says, “Or find a woman writer.”
I’m thinking it would be fun to make a graphic of Philip as Gene in Shepard Fairey’s 3-color stencil style.
